First point against Augsburg in the Bundesliga

The two best teams in the current second half of the Bundesliga met at the Millerntor and both remained undefeated. There were very few shots on goal and FC St. Pauli needed help from their opponents to take a 1-0 lead. FC Augsburg scored in the closing stages when the brown-whites had to make two substitutions due to injuries and the sequence of events suddenly wasn't XNUMX% right.

But let's start at the beginning: an eerie silence as the two teams entered the pitch. A few days after the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the people in the Auschwitz concentration camp, the Millerntor commemorated the Holocaust and the Nazi reign of terror. The need to remember these events became clear again this week.

The CDU/CSU is completely unnecessarily making the right-wing party acceptable in the Bundestag and voting with them on a so-called motion for a resolution. This currently has no impact on any possible legislation. It does not help with any of the issues raised in the motion. The maneuver is pure political farce and is based on the polemic that migration would make our country unsafe. Seriously: 2000 times more people die in a traffic accident than in an attack by a mentally disturbed person of foreign origin. Significantly more women also die as a result of violence by German men. In 2024, almost twice as many people died from police firearms than in terrorist attacks. What some politicians (and also the media) are trying to put on an agenda cannot be supported by evidence. I am extremely upset about this shift in discourse.

Let's get back to the game: the last time the two teams met was in 2010. Back then, FC St. Pauli won 3-0 against third-placed Augsburg and consolidated its second place four games before the end of the season - and was promoted in the end. Just as a side note: ten of the teams that were in the second division with FC St. Pauli back then are now playing in the third division and lower.

This time it was a game between brown-white and red-green-white in the first league. The fog was moving further and further into the stadium and making it difficult to see the game. But you didn't miss much. There were very few shots on goal at the end. Fotmob measured just 0,8 to 0,32 expected goals. Looking at it through brown-white glasses, it is of course annoying when Augsburg scores a goal with two shots on goal. In my view, a fair draw, but Tim from Millernton obviously knows that much better: left it to itself.

Before the game, there were explanations about the pilot project to allow referees to comment on decisions after a VAR call, similar to the NFL. It's a shame that no VAR call was made in this game. I would have liked to have heard what was said.

FC St. Pauli is now seven points ahead of the relegation zone. I hope the injuries to Morgan Guilavogui and Manolis Saliakas are not too serious. You saw in the last few minutes against Augsburg how important both are for FC St. Pauli's game. Get well soon, not only to both players, but also to the fan who had to be treated by an emergency doctor.

The next home game will be on February 15th against Freiburg. The two Eggesteins can dig up the lawn then. I'm looking forward to it.
