With the Ricoh GRIII in Oman

Since I have now sold my Ricoh GRIII, it is time to show some pictures. I took this small camera with fine optics with me to Oman in 2019. After that, it ended up lying unused in the closet too often - and that wasn't the Ricoh's fault. Why am I only showing the pictures now? The original plan was to have the Oman photos published by Ricoh as part of the International Tourism Exchange 2020. Oman was a partner country for the ITB. For known reasons, nothing came of the large trade fair planned for March 2020. I liked the idea of turning my private vacation into something public. But the last almost three years have thrown many a plan into disarray.

In any case, the Ricoh GRIII was one with the format factor Fuji X70 my replacement for that one. Both cameras are ideal as a pocket camera for on the go. In contrast to the Fuji, the Ricoh impresses with great colors and, above all, sensationally good optics. Great sharpness, very good bokeh and quite good scattered light behavior are convincing with the GRIII. I have never seen this quality in the picture for such a small camera.

It is a recommendation when traveling, and not just because of its imaging performance. Because of its size, you can always have it with you and it doesn't look too cluttered to strangers when taking photos.

Just take a look at my vacation pictures from two weeks in Oman. I tried to show the possibilities of the camera at the same time.

I really hope you can see the quality of the camera in the photos. The 28mm optics, converted to XNUMXmm format, perform very well. The resolution is also very good at close range. ISO noise is low even in difficult lighting conditions. Since the camera fits well in the hand, you can also use slightly longer exposure times and thus reduce the noise.

Why didn't I use the Ricoh GRIII as much after that? Because the years 20 to 22 hardly offered any opportunity to be on the road. Why did I sell the camera now? Because I'm taking more photos with Leica again for purely emotional, nostalgic reasons. A Leica M9 has taken the place of the Ricoh GRIII. This is significantly older and also a bit larger - the Ricoh GRIII doesn't have to hide in its performance, quite the opposite. It's due to my personal nerd factor that I still prefer to take photos with the inferior M9.

If my pictures have made you want to visit Oman, I can help you Travel provider Evaneos recommend. There are many countries with local providers to discover.

  1. Super nice photographs, dear Stefan. The Ricoh GRIII with a small viewfinder – THAT would be my dream. Since it doesn't come with a viewfinder, I unfortunately didn't warm up to it in the long term, even though the image quality was really very good.
