What can go wrong...

I wouldn't have expected that either. Not after around 5 years of hard use. Not after almost 400000 releases…

And it happened like this: half-time whistle in the football stadium - time everything hectic pack up and quickly change my position for the second half. After all, I want the gates from FC St. Pauli also got it in the box after the break. In addition, in the remaining minutes without playing, I still have to look for a few pictures for the editorial team, label them, select excerpts and find the channel in the hopelessly overwhelmed radio network at Millerntor in order to be able to send out my pictures. Everything has to be there fast go. So I grab my equipment and with an awkward turn of my body, mine swings Nikon D4 with the useless eyelet for the non-existent camera strap directly onto the display of my good old D3. I only hear one short crrrk. My colleagues standing around also. "Oh!"

No time to worry about that luxury problems zu

Later I realize with relief: the Nikon D3 is alive. More indestructible Professional body that is worth every cent of its purchase price. OK, I had some luck too. It actually only destroyed the display glass, the display itself remained unharmed. A relatively inexpensive repair, for which the Nikon Service Point estimates less than €120. Actually, I could have saved myself that, but I was afraid of cutting my nose on the splinters of the display when looking through the viewfinder.

  1. Oh, that really looks worse than it was. I'm just surprised that the display gives up the ghost in the event of such a collision. Must have really hit the spot with concentrated force and was very unfortunate.

Lucky again, I think – is the first shutter still in the D3? Hard to believe 🙂 It's almost an investment for life!

  2. With my D3 I now have almost 500000 releases with the first shutter and I hope it lasts for a while. During a check and clean at the beginning of the year I asked NPS how much a new one would cost. Changing it together with the panel driver was probably just under €1500 and I think it was almost a total loss. Not to mention the leather covering, almost €250 for a few would-be leather parts glued on. Fortunately, I have a second one if the shutter breaks, it will be sent to Poland at the end of the year, it is significantly cheaper, it is not NPS and takes longer, but it is an official Nikon workshop...

    1. Oh – my second shutter cost less than €500 net, but without the aperture driver. Luckily my insurance covered the damage and so I was only stuck with the deductible of €50. 🙂

  3. I was told about resetting the trigger counter that it will not be reset after changing the shutter, unless you have to change one/the main board...

  4. Ouch. Our front door looked similar two weeks ago. Unfortunately, 120 euros wasn't enough.
But that also speaks for the D3 if that was the first repair

  5. The repair is also cheaper, 15 - 20 euros for a new display glass, warm up the old one a little with a hairdryer and lift it from the edge, remove the remaining double-sided adhesive tape, stick on the new glass and you're done! You can get the new one at the FA Chip Tip in the Colonnaden. an LCD would have only cost you 40 euros.

  6. Woah, a blessing in disguise! My heart would have stopped for a few seconds at the sight.
A few years ago I was traveling on an island in Croatia with my small but beloved digital camera. We swam straight from the boat to shore and then explored the rocky island. Unfortunately, the entire beach consisted of sharp-edged rocks and of course I managed to slip on exactly these things with the camera in my hand. The (fortunately only optical) scratches on the camera almost made me cry, but the 10 meters of salt water that ate through all my wounds were even worse. 😉

    Best regards,
    Christina

  7. I'm sorry that this relatively small repair glazing has become so expensive. No, I have never seen the display on a camera break. But at least it can be repaired at all.

  8. Oh yes, €120 for a glass repair of this size is a bit expensive. Although you have to see it as an investment. The main thing is that the camera still works and you can keep taking photos! I hope you continue to have fun taking photos!

  9. The article on the topic of repair glazing is very helpful. I wanted to be better informed because I know very little about it. After reading this article, I know enough about this topic.
