Once a year I am drawn to the Audimax at the University of Hamburg. Once a year the great event “Get in the Ring” takes place there. This was the case again in 2013 and somehow I have the feeling that the organizer Till Görres each Year more exciting, because more balanced fights can be put together. And I don't even want to know how much work goes into it...
So there were exciting duels and fair sport to be seen again this year. To be honest: even though this event was once again very well attended, I still hope that the Audimax would be bursting at the seams. In kickboxing there is more action in one round than in boxing in the whole 12 rounds - and millions of people are sitting in front of their television screens. The athletes really deserve it. Although this sport looks dangerous, relatively little happens because the opponents treat each other quite fairly.
In three times three minutes, the opponents try to get each other out of breath with their fists and feet. There is always a winner. Either by KO or submission of the opponent or if the referees have scored accordingly. In the latter case, it can happen that the referees come to a draw and then there is simply another round of fighting. It also happened on Saturday and almost logically in one of the most exciting fights. I felt a bit sorry for the two opponents because after three rounds both fighters were pretty much exhausted. It's definitely not easy to concentrate again and mobilize your strength.
In any case, I take my hat off to these athletes and this sport. From a photographer's point of view, K1 is truly world-class, because the camera has something to offer in almost every second. You can spend hours afterwards picking out the best scenes 🙂
And at the next opportunity I'll tell you the story about the top fight of the evening, where I went home with a picture.

I can only agree with that... although apparently the knee is used, that would have to be Muay Thai (Thai boxing). Most of the fighters in the pictures are very well trained, which shows the high level of fighting.
It is too 🙂
The photos are pretty cool.

My goodness, it must be fun to accompany this event with the camera! Great editing and of course pictures!
It's also fun to watch. 🙂
Hello Stefan
But I was reassured when I “checked” your EXIFs and my worldview was fine!! 😉
Hand on heart: Can you imagine that these photos would have been possible with an OM-D/E-M1 or comparable mFT and the fast 1,8/45 and 1,8/75 Zuikos? Or have you even tried it?
Ralf
PS.: There is no need to comment on the photos 😉 ONE Aaaaaaa
Hey Ralf,
That works too – see http://www.stefangroenveld.de/2012/mit-der-lumix-gh3-am-ring/ : )
Thanks! That convinces me more than the chatter about what mFT can do. But why doesn't anyone show it more often? Really action! I would be even more convinced if there was a comparable handball hall or ice hockey arena...
Ralf
I have also shown handball with the x100s. And football. But due to the lack of focal length, it is difficult to capture such sports.
I can't really do anything with martial arts. Nevertheless: great location, great lighting, great action – great photos 🙂

First class shots! Your tournament report sounds really exciting. The air in the hall must have been burning when the fourth round began.
Then I’m curious about the “top fight” story.
Greeting Stephan
Thanks. The other pictures are here http://www.stefangroenveld.de/2013/ashkan-gohar-vs-frank-madsen/
