Andreas - pizza creator at Joey's

Have you ever wondered what the big pizza chains actually do? new types of pizza emerge? Well, the profession of pizza creator actually exists. Andreas is one of those people. At Joey's. From where I know this? I photographed him on behalf of Joey's. 🙂

Andreas, who is a qualified ecotrophologist, usually comes up with two new types of pizza every month. He is currently handing over some of his responsibility. Joey's Facebook fans can now create their own pizza using the so-called Joey's Fanpizza app. Andreas is on the jury and will bring his experience in tasting the fan pizzas into the selection process.

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting him and his fellow members of the jury in advance Illustration of the Facebook campaign I took the portraits with very simple means, as I had set up several “photo stations” due to time constraints – my picture tasks did not only consist of these portraits and had been clearly discussed beforehand. As even my equipment is not infinitely large, the portraits were taken with an SB-900, which I fired into a white translucent umbrella via a TTL extension cable. At about belly height, a silver micro-mini sunbouncer as a reflector.

Andreas was the first person in front of my camera on the busy shooting day. And the path from "I'm so unphotogenic" to "hey, I like myself in that" involved a conversation about photography. Andreas had just bought a new camera and had a few questions. Forgetting the time pressure (the CEOs are coming soon), we chatted for a while.

I think it's completely normal for people to initially feel uncomfortable when they step in front of the camera. When I am photographed, I also notice that about myself. In my experience, the only way to get natural photos is through the chemistry that has to be created between the person and the photographer. Thats my job. And that's why I love photography so much: much more important than pressing the shutter button is building a connection between me and the person I have in front of me and am allowed to portray. This is always new and over and over again an exciting challenge.

  1. ...the last paragraph speaks volumes. That's why I like to have the camera handed to me "ready" when I'm ready to go at some point.
There are people who criticize something like this or make derogatory comments about it. These are the tech guys who don't understand what's really important 😉

    1. That's how it is, I don't have anyone to pass on ;), but the camera doesn't always have to be present, let alone in the face of the person being photographed. Building mood and trust is the be-all and end-all.

  2. Very nice portrait – I really like it very much
    And with “so little” effort.
On the topic of “feeling unwell”:
Take a look at us photographers, how we set up on site with all the equipment. Who shouldn’t be afraid of that at first 🙂

  3. Pizza creator is definitely an interesting profession - this is the first time I've ever heard that such a thing exists. Ultimately, it's about highlighting and presenting your product in the most advantageous way possible.
