Pictures from the workshop "Concert Photography"

I was in February again at a workshop by Guido Karp - this time it was about Concert photography. A photographic topic that I find very interesting. Unfortunately I'm coming rarely usedHowever, I know from many colleagues that the "three songs, no flashes" assignments are becoming increasingly difficult. I am much more interested in Guido Karp's approach - here, concert photography is more reportage, event and portrait photography. That's why I didn't hesitate for a second to sign up.

There are only now pictures because it was a condition of the workshop that pictures could only be shown when the artists release them. For me there is no reason to take part in the workshop, because that's how I do it with my bridal couples or other portrait photos. (Yes, I know my rights as an author, but I also introduce myself my responsibility as a photographer.)

The concert photography workshop took place as part of a real concert. We met at 15 p.m., discussed interesting facts and procedures, checked the lighting conditions during the sound check and were able to photograph the entire concert. Each participant was then allowed to send in a limited number of pictures and have them evaluated and approved by the musicians and Guido Karp. Guido Karp has a particular idea about the last point crazy work and created an almost 1000-page PDF with all the pictures of all participants and the comments. Hammer! Big thanks to Mr. Karp.

I'm at the workshop again learned a lot and I can use that not only for concert photography. Work even more precisely, become even more reliable, observe even more closely, adapt even more...

I don't want to hide the fact that this was also the case at the workshop some things went wrong is. But that was exclusively on some participants. I was lucky and unlucky. Unlucky because I couldn't get out of the trench from the front of the main band (Edit: I could get out of the ditch, but only from the side - so that there is no misunderstanding.) was allowed to take photos. Some of the top act's participants probably didn't stick to their agreements in the first half of the concert, which is why security forbade the workshop participants from staying at the front of the pit. In order not to make it too crowded in the pit, we divided our group and I took photos from the audience in the first half and from the pit in the second half. I was lucky because two people were allowed to go to the back of the stage for the last song - and one of the lucky winners wasn't on time. I happened to be in the right place at the right moment and got the free spot.

I would like to express my delight that almost all of my pictures were approved for publication. A surprising number of them were not only described as “very nice” by the musician and Guido Karp, but even as “sensational”. Guido Karp named two pictures as his favorite of all his concert workshops.

So now have fun with some impressions and my favorite pictures (no, I will not show you all the released pictures) from the Hamburg concert with “My First Band","Jim Kroft" and "Sunrise Ave“ in February 2012 in the Alsterdorfer Sporthalle.

  1. Great pictures!

And come on…don’t be so modest. At least say which images Guido Karp chose as his favorites from all the workshops. I'm just interested in which images are particularly popular.

  2. Hi Stefan, I had been wondering when you would show the pictures 😉 It was a great concert, you captured the atmosphere very nicely!
    VLG, Gunther

  3. I have to say Stefan, cool pictures. The workshop was worth it, right? And the two of us on stage at the end, that was something... Of the pictures you posted, I really like the long shot from the mixer and the last one from behind, as well as all the others. But that's no longer 24mm, is it? If YOU don't mind, I would like to link my pictures from Sunrise Avenue here, maybe some of you will like them: http://markusbruegge.de/sunrise-avenue-konzertfotos-aus-hamburg/
    Best regards, Markus

    1. I have nothing against your link here at all. I actually think it's a shame that we can't bundle other people's links. GK has put some pictures online on FB, but you have to be friends with him there too…

  4. Nice blog post, I find the written word almost as nice as the pictures, where by the way the numbers six and eleven are my favorites.
In the former, color and the synchronous movement (at first glance I thought he was playing in front of his own picture on a canvas), and in the latter, how the light source shines around the artist.
Reminds me of your workshop. Somehow. 🙂

It's exciting what you say about the workshop in general, seeing concert photography as a report and then taking your "students" to a real concert. That's kind of cool...

    1. I was definitely planning on doing something like that for sports photography, but after my experiences, I know that it was the right decision not to do something like that. I cannot take responsibility for photographers I do not know.

      1. I can understand that well. You don't know what makes the participants tick when 20.000 people are screaming, singing and rocking in the background.
In the end, it's your name that sticks when one of the participants storms onto the pitch so that he can properly frame his goalkeeper portrait with the 16 marker.
For you that means a ban on Millerntor and only pictures of the HSV. I wouldn't want to risk that either... :)

  5. Hey, Stefan,

If you do another workshop, please send me an email. I'm sure I'll go to Hamburg again.

I'll definitely leave the players alone 😀

The concert pictures are delicious. I like 9, 10 and 13 the most.

    Best regards,

    Christoph

  6. Great article and sensational pictures. 2 and 6 are my favorites.

I would find a post on the subject of concert photography very exciting. What should you pay attention to, which settings, etc.

So you shouldn't/can't just do sports 😉

  7. You told me about the workshop - but I've only now found the blog entry... your description complements it perfectly!
I like to think that you were way ahead in the ranking with these pictures.

    Only the HSV

    1. Erm - I don't think I told it like that. I was more pleased that Mr. Karp's several pictures were selected as "Best of Workshop". I didn't create a ranking and therefore couldn't say where I might be...
