Lastolite Ezybox Lastolite Ezybox

Equipment I like

I work very often with system flashes. And I tried a lot. System flashes are super practical because they are small and flexible, but this advantage is also a disadvantage: the light source is unfortunately very small. Small light sources mean harsh light. Hard light can be interesting, but my jobs often require soft light - especially at weddings, simple portraits or older people.

Since I don't want to miss the convenience of system flashes, but also need soft light quickly and easily, I looked for a suitable solution - and found it for myself. The Ezybox by Lastolite!

The Lastolite Ezybox - folded and compared with a Nikon SB-900 system flash

The Ezybox looks wonderfully inconspicuous when folded. But hidden in this small package is a 60x60cm softbox that can be assembled in around a minute. Don't you think so? Then watch this video – and please excuse the poor picture and sound quality, I only had an iPhone for video recordings 😉

The Ezybox is delivered as follows: softbox with silver interior surfaces, diffuser cloth inside and outside, flash holder. You can buy the handle in different lengths. Of course, the softbox also fits on any lamp tripod. I find the option of using the softbox with a handle very charming because it opens up very flexible possibilities - if you have an assistant at your side.

Of course you now also want to see the picture that I took in the video. Please!

By the way, the Ezybox is just as easy to reassemble. I've put it up and taken it down many times and it really seems sturdy.

Of course I would also like to show you a picture with a serious background. For this I would like to thank the esteemed Sven Wiesner for his permission to show the picture here.

The image is of course post-processed - even Nikon lenses don't vignette that much. But I think that with such an example image it is more important to be able to recognize the light characteristics and what beautiful, large light reflections arise in the eyes. The softbox was about a meter away from Sven.

By the way, the Lastolite Ezybox is not particularly inexpensive. However, the robustness and easy handling are worth the price for me.

And yes, I know there are replicas that cost about half as much. But I have to be able to rely on my equipment and with the original I was very sure that it would work before I bought it - too many professionals (e.g Joe McNally) use and rave about her. I can understand that well now.

Update: I have heard from some buyers that the softbox is no longer delivered so small, but "only" folded into a triangle. That's a shame!

Another update: the softbox is now called 54×54 but is the same size as the 60×60 – Lastolite now measures differently. There is also a Joe McNally version with a white reflective layer. And there is now an even larger softbox measuring 76x76cm. Everything sounds good...

  1. Very nice article.
I was recently faced with the decision between the Lastolite Ezybox or the Flash2Softbox.
    I decided on the Flash2Softbox 40×40.
After the video, I would probably now also use the Ezybox, because the setup is much easier!
And there isn't that much of a price difference from what I've seen.
But you can't complain about the workmanship of the Flash2Softbox, very good!

  2. Super cool! Beautifully done! More of that!
I have the cheap model from China for half the price...
However, the interior diffuser is missing here, which results in a slightly different light characteristic. When I look at it like that... I know what you mean 😉

  3. I can confirm, I love the EzyBox too!

However, I own both the 40x40cm and the 60x60cm EzyBox, and would strongly recommend the 60x60cm version to everyone. Not only is it larger, meaning it has a softer radiation surface, it can also be folded more compactly.

  4. A great post and my Amazon wish list has just been expanded by one item 😉
That's exactly what I was looking for, believe it or not!
    Thank you!

  6. Yes Lastolite builds very good quality. I've already learned to appreciate my triflip.
Do you have any good shopping sources where you can get Lastolite here in Germany or a good online shop?

    Thank You

  8. Hi Stefan,

great video. I've been using the box for a year now. In your test images at the end you connected the flash with a TTL cable. How did you get the flash with cable onto the flash holder on the Ezybox? The flash cable only has a threaded connection at the bottom, or did you use an adapter?

    Best regards,
    Sebastian

  9. I'll dig this up 😀
The day before yesterday I would have firmly stated that available light is the only real thing anyway and that flash is out of the question in most cases. Because I simply have no idea 😀
After a lazy weekend alternating between bed and couch, with what felt like 10 hours of reading the blog + 10 hours of watching YouTube photography videos, the only question now is which softbox I should order. The DHL man will even deliver the wireless flash triggers tomorrow morning.
Therefore my question (since this article is already 3 years old): would you buy a softbox today, would it be the Ezybox again?
I would like to thank you in advance for your various insightful blog articles!
    Julian

    1. What a cold weekend can be good for 🙂
      Get well!

Even though the Ezybox no longer comes folded up so small, I can still recommend it. Mine still finds its way into my camera bag when it needs to be small and quick. A good choice for the system flash…

    1. Hello, yes, I still use it. However, the pack size has been changed and therefore transport is different. You have to see if this is right for you. And I think I would take the version with a white reflective surface. They didn't exist back then, but they make the light even softer.
