ARD and ZDF present the 2010 World Cup

Last week, the presenters, commentators and experts from ARD and ZDF, who are bringing the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa into our living rooms, were presented in one of the best hotels in Hamburg.

As expected, there was a large crowd of photographers and the two television stations had different concepts for dealing with them. While ARD had a form of controlled "pack shooting", ZDF had a long line and a resolute young lady with a whistle who vigorously whistled back anyone who stepped out of line.

I had yes already written here, why these events don't make my photographer's heart beat faster. The joint event by ARD and ZDF was even worse, because at the ARD pack shooting it was hardly possible to influence the person being photographed because the hustle and bustle was simply too big. And on ZDF there were only group shots and the groups were so far away from the photographer that it was difficult enough to even get the attention of all group members. Overall, I liked the ARD Rudelschiessen better because I had the chance to photograph Oliver Kahn alone - while my colleagues were all busy with Gerhard Delling.

Things only got funny when Reinhold Beckmann entered the scene and the first colleague asked: "Can we have the name please?" The other ARD people were always introduced - but Beckmann burst into the action without prior notice. The crowning glory of the humor possible at such events was then put on by another colleague when he shouted loudly: "Please look here, Mr. Kerner!" He didn't get a good picture, but he did get a World Cup ball thrown casually from the wrist...

  1. I always find an interesting report that also shows the background of such pictures exciting!

What is the purpose of the gentleman with the streamlined hairstyle (on the right in the picture) and the stick with an arrow? Is he supposed to direct the gaze of the "subject" in the direction of certain photographers?

  2. By the way, I think the Netzer picture is very original. And if you were the only one who took the photo, then you really took a great picture. Especially because Netzer is giving up his job as Gerhard Dellin's "rival" after the World Cup.

That has something of “There is always a clever mind behind it.” 😉
